Set inside the beautiful, red-brick, historic South Melbourne Commons building lies a new community hub with a strong focus on sustainability and the environment and a link to Friends of the Earth. Think along the lines of CERES meets the Abbotsford Convent and you kind of get the vibe.

The recently opened Commons Cafe, managed by the sustainable catering group Original Foods, places strong focus and value on all the South Melbourne Commons principles, and aims to encourage the community and their customers to become engaged with social and environmental issues. Mostly organic produce is used, along with local and seasonal produce (a lot of which is grown in their own on-site veggie garden), free range eggs, and organic, fair trade, rainforest alliance coffee.

In a nod to cool cafe culture, the fit-out (although still quite sparse) has a slightly industrial edge with replica Tolix chairs and stools, vintage looking light-fittings and groovy menus using recycled hessian sacks. You can sit inside and enjoy the beauty of the old architecture, high ceilings, and large arched windows, or sit outside amongst the towering golden sunflowers, zucchinis, tomatoes, pumpkins and more.

Highchairs are provided for the little ones, babycinos ($1.50) are served with mini marshmallows on top and a small retro paper straw, and special kids menu items are also available with both brunchie and lunchie items including cheese toasties cut into triangles, a single pancake with summer berries and maple syrup, or a mini beef burger. Some standard menu items would also be suitable for the tiny patrons too especially the glass cabinet filled with fresh salads, baguettes, pies, cakes and muffins.

There is plenty to keep the little ones occupied here, with a wall of secondhand books for sale (supporting the local Rotary Club), a kids corners with hay bale seats, toys and books out the back, and a big (clean!) sandpit out the front complete with buckets, spades, wheelbarrows, balls and other toys.

This new-ish cafe that is only a couple of months young offers a unique selling point and promises great potential, but for me still has a few hurdles to tackle first. It lacked atmosphere, vibe and warmth, the service was a little strange and aloof, and the order and pay at the counter and cash only rules can be a bit of a pain. And for a cafe that offers so many kid-friendly ticks, on a Saturday at peak breakfast time we were surprised to be the only family with kids there, with the rest of the clientele “ahem” a lot older. Was a bonus for us though as our two little ones were in heaven with the entire sandpit and outdoor area to themselves. So spread the word folks, check it out and give that sandpit some loving!

This cafe is a lovely option for a weekend breakfast combined with a visit to the South Melbourne Market around the corner or the on-site organic food and grocery co-op The Pantry, a mid-week Mother’s Group coffee and muffin catch-up, or to pop in after playgroup or an art and craft session at the delightful Apples and Jam located just upstairs.

If you’ve got that holiday spirit in your stride then pulling up a pew at Groove is sure to satisfy. It’s a help-yourself-takeaway-kinda-place but they’ll wait your table if you stop a while. Sometimes there are places that I visit that don’t necessarily tick all the ‘Little Eats’ boxes but there is something about them that I think will appeal to parents. Groove is one of those places. So let me set it straight from the outset, this is essentially a milk bar. But the folks have thought things through a little more and what you have is a gorgeous little spot to stop a while en route to and from the beach.

Groove positions itself as ‘food with spirit’. It is cute little place with mismatched furniture in the front and the requisite people-watching bar at the window. There are retro Peter’s ice-cream metal signs adorning the walls and a casual simplicity that oozes relaxation. You can grab a newspaper, a litre of milk and a cold drink and mosey on your merry way or pull up a seat on one of the outdoor tables and take in the sunshine and soak up some more of that Bellarine vibe.

A big drawcard to the Groove scene is that all their pies, pasties and sausage rolls are made daily on site. Along with their cakes, slices and take home meals it makes for a simple but wholesome menu. Try an egg, bacon and cheese toastie on plain white bread or a bowl of their daily changing soup. For us, it has been a regular inhaling of the steamed South Melbourne market dim sims that are as big as your head but super delicious. And what would an Aussie milk bar be without a steaming hot dimmie?

The kids and I took respite in the Groove Garden one hot January day. It is a cute shaded spot protected from the road by a bank of olive trees and quirkily decorated with bikes on the walls and plant filled watering cans on the tables. There is access to a toilet via the kitchen but no baby change facility so it is definitely a quick-stop-kinda-shop. After lunch the girls were treated to a Ben & Jerry’s pot of ice cream goodness. There is also the standard Street’s option if a rainbow Paddlepop is more your go. The coffee is Piazza d’Oro and whilst the long black was made well, I’m not a big fan of the brand in general. The gluten free brownie is decadent but moreish – exactly how a brownie should be and the apple teacake is lovely. There are also bags of mixed lollies and a few basic household items that you would expect from an old school milk bar.

If you’re heading back from the beach with the sand in your shoes and that post wave hunger then Groove has got what you need. Grab a milkshake and a dim sim to satisfy the immediate hunger and then select a Thai Green Curry or a Spinach & Ricotta Cannelloni for the road from their excellent range of take home meals. The Groove in Grove will hit the spot.

We popped into Main Ridge Dairy not really knowing what to expect. Holidaying down that neck of the woods on the Mornington Peninsula, and being big cheese-lovers we were keen to visit and sample some of their famous cheeses. We knew there were goats on site that the little ones would enjoy seeing, but we kind of assumed that the visit would be a quick one as the kids might be a little bored.

Instead we enjoyed a really lovely afternoon there, and the kids (thats our kids, not the baby goats) had just as much as fun as we did.

First we stretched our legs, had a run and play and said hello to “the girls” (the 170 milking goats who call the farm their home), then we sat down for a spot of afternoon tea inside. We enjoyed a cup of Fair Trade Organic Grinders coffee, while the little ones were kept entertained by the lovely big basket of toys, and then were treated to Babycino’s (with marshie) and a pink and purple “Ribbit” each - a cute froggie shaped shortbread biscuit with coloured icing.

While the kids (and Pappa Bear) were happily playing, Mamma then got to go off and enjoy a cheese tasting. From soft to hard, fetta to halloumi, ricotta to camembert, it was all delightful. I highly recommend the Cashmere (a spreadable goat curd) with a little Red Hill Kitchen Beetroot, Balsamic and Ginger Chutney on top. Absolutely divine. I bought both. And then a leisurely little browse through the on-site boutique stocking La Guiole knives, ceramic homewares, wooden cheese-boards, and sweet hand made kids toys.

Although this is not strictly a cafe, this cool architecturally designed building and dairy farm is still a unique place for foodie families to visit whilst holidaying on the Peninsula. It offers a fun and spacious venue to pop in for a cup of coffee, hot chocolate, babycino or even a glass of fresh goat milk and a sweet treat, or a cheese hit or gourmet tasting platter. Perhaps a selection of the days cheeses, local olives, fresh bread, quince paste, Victorian muscatels and other local produce. There is even a special children’s cheese platter for the mini gourmands.

The kids will get a kick out of patting and chatting with the goats (and baby kids depending on when you visit), as well as other activities including goat milking, Cheese making classes for both adults and kids, and dairy tours.

This newly opened café used to be a daggy corner milk bar and I remember stopping off for a cool drink after a long bike ride back in the early 90’s. Boy how it’s changed! The entire building has had a well deserved makeover and has been transformed into a super chic local foodie hotspot!

The vibe when I walked in was trendy, relaxed and fun. My immediate response was how fantastic the quirky décor was! There’s kind of an industrial feel with polished concrete floors and heavy metal chairs, and a vintage feel with the beautiful wooden Bentwood chairs.

The café is quite spacious so it’s easy to manoeuvre large prams. It’s definitely not a milk bar anymore but there is still a sense of nostalgia with heaps of vintage collectables, toys and gadgets on display, even in the bathroom. I thought the line up of toy soldier figurines on the windowsill was a cute touch and would help keep the kiddies entertained while the mummies catch up.

The Staff were friendly and welcoming. The waitress that greeted me when I walked in showed me to the group table so that we had plenty of room around it for our prams. A high chair wasn’t immediately offered, but there are a few available so just ask if you do need one. Our little ones stayed mostly in their prams and also sat happily on our laps. It’s not the sort of place where you can let the kids run free range, but there is a box of books for the little ones to read, and it still appears a popular spot for foodie families - I spotted at least 2 pregnant ladies and about 4 other tables with (well behaved) kids enjoying a spot of cafe culture.

The food was great and came out quite quickly, and the Di Bella coffee was excellent! And for all you soy latte drinkers out there, yes they use Bonsoy! We enjoyed our breakfast very much; poached eggs on multigrain with a side of avocado and a BLAT. Both were delicious. The younger babies, Cherry (8 months) and Pascale, (9 months), munched on bread with mashed avocado from our plates and Etian (2 years) loved her babycino and blueberry muffin, even though she was eyeing off the jars of lollipops, fortune cookies, treats and baked goodies.

As for parking, we got a great spot just out front on Montague Street for 1 hour. Very convenient for loading and unloading my pram. There are also 2 hour parking spots on Kerferd Road. And for those that live just a hop skip and a jump away and can enjoy a walk with the pram to get there, there is plenty of “pram parking” space.

There’s a real cruisy local vibe with plenty of repeat customers popping in and out for a coffee or a bite. I’ll definitely be returning for a repeat visit soon too and might even suggest Truman as the location for one of our weekly mother’s group coffee catch-ups!

Barwon Heads locals are lucky to have this Mexican gem in their ‘hood. So kick back in a brightly coloured Acapulco chair and mucho relaxo.

Ole! El Poco Burrito has got it going on! This seriously cute little weatherboard shack is decorated in an explosion of colour, quirky knick-knacks and dramatic artefacts. Tables are laid with brightly coloured oilcloths and mismatched chairs add to the eclectic decorations. There is a cute terrace area out the front replete with brightly painted outdoor furniture and festoon lighting. And with plans for a beer garden out the back, El Poco Burrito will be rocking it during the summer months if it keeps up the standard that has already been set.

It was the end of the weekend when we took advantage of the early dinner sitting and ducked out with the two eldest gals. I wasn’t sure if they’d be up for Mexican but they promised me they loved tacos and that was enough to get us there.

Faster than the staff could say ‘would you like this table’, we had ordered the guacamole and corn chips and a Medelo Especial – a smooth and very drinkable beer that kept that weekend feeling going for a little longer. The kids tucked into the ‘green dip’ and we checked out the menu. It was hard to go past the signature dish of fish tacos – flathead tails in soft tacos with purple cabbage and pico de gallo. At $24, they’re not the cheapest thing on offer but with three tacos plus a generous serving of corn chips, they are certainly good value. The kids tucked into tiny tacos and mexi-mac-n-cheese. The "ninos" menu is well thought out and reasonably priced which reflects owner Amy’s understanding of kids with three young ones of her own.

The mornings see a kiosk operation where you can grab a very well made Genovese coffee and a breakfast taco from the little window. It is all take away but you can pull up an Acapulco chair and kick back in the Barwon Heads vibe. There’s no bubbacino's for the kids but super popular chocolate milk boxes instead.

A Mexican cantina will definitely not suit all families but mine loved it. The beer was cold, the food was great and the service was slick. It is a tiny place crammed full of tables and decorations which kept little eyes well entertained. And Amy’s signage of ‘Unsupervised kids will be given a shot of Tequila and a free kitten’ smacks of hilarity and makes an awkward subject more comfortable.

Apparently the blender is always on at El Poco Burrito, which must mean that the margaritas are just that, mean! I think I’ll have to save them for another visit, perhaps sans enfants. But, in the meantime, this new Barwon Heads gem will have a well-worn sandy track from the beach. Bring on the summer!

You know you are on to a winner when you walk into a new cafe (or the backyard of a cafe to be exact) and your almost 3 year old proclaims “Wow! This is COOL!” and then proceeds to run around screaming with delight “Look Mummy a caravan! Look Mummy a lawnmower! Look Mummy a bike! Look Mummy another bike! Wow!”.

Jellybread, located in Barkly Village, West Footscray, used to be a very cute and cosy little cafe, however it has recently expanded into the old chemist next door, taken over the whole building, renovated and created a backyard haven that kids will delight in and parents can chill out in.

We arrived in the morning, just a few locals about, warm and smiling staff, and the lovely owner Vanessa cruising around with her 15 month old on her hip as she took orders and the like. That is one chilled out cafe babe! As the morning went on, more and more people arrived, and by lunchtime it was Mum and Bub central! Prams, kiddies, babies and local Mammas everywhere.

Inside, which is all colour, fun and retro vibes, there is plenty of space and plenty of fun to be had. A hot pink wall on one side shows off an artfully displayed vintage vinyl and postcard collection, on the other side retro wooden shelving offers stacks of books, mags and papers for the grown ups to get lost in. And a dedicated kids play room at the back, guaranteed to tickle the fancy of your little ones, is complete with all sorts of toys, games, books, crayons, paper, blackboard and chalk, and a foam play mat on the floor.

The backyard area or “Jellybread Park” as the name written in chalk on the footpath suggests, is just like being in someones huge backyard. Green grassy lawn for the kids to run around on, toys scattered about including tricycles, buckets, and a toy lawnmower, an old vintage school desk, and the piece de resistance - the vintage caravan painted purple and green with the bright sunny yellow interior and black and white checkerboard floor. There is also an old rustic fishing boat which will soon be turned into a sandpit, the beginnings of a kitchen garden and a few more surprises on the way. So watch this space as it develops and grows.

Our Mother’s Group catch-up was one of those relaxing mornings that went on to lunchtime and you just didn’t want it to end. We rustled up some picnic rugs from our boots, spread them on the lawn, and settled in for a good old goss while the little ones played. The kids were treated to babycino’s (which come in two thoughtful sizes, bubbacino and kiddy-cino), mini milkshakes, mini hot chocolates and Gingerbread men and smartie cookies. While we enjoyed Genovese coffee, sweet home baked treats (I had the rhubarb and polenta cake which was divine, although it was toss up between that and the decadent looking gluten free chocolate brownie), and yummy light brunchy items including home made sausage rolls with salad, sourdough rye toast with jam and Turkish bread toasties.

The menu is smallish, but there are enough options to hit the spot for breakfast, lunch and everything in between. I already know what I am going to have next time - a Chai milkshake (how good does that sound?) and a savoury spinach and fetta muffin served with butter and homemade tomato relish.

We left Jellybread with sunkissed skin, rosy pink cheeks, babycino smeared faces, grass stained knees and full tummies. Happy, tired and worn out after a few hours playing in the sunshine but already planning when we will come back again. Yes my darling almost 3 year old, you were right, this place IS cool.

Little Eats detailed review:

The Orrong Park Kiosk changed hands recently and is now being run by the cool crew behind TOFWD* (*The Organic Food and Wine Deli) in Degraves St in Melbourne's CBD.

The new kiosk lease literally happened overnight and so Jeanette and her team had a huge task at hand giving the kiosk a massive clean, a quick spruce up and bumping-in the new store contents – seeing the kiosk only have 48 hours down time!

Unlike its sister in Degraves Street, this TOFWD does offer non-vegetarian options, with family favourites such as pies and sausage rolls on the menu – all using organic meat of course!

TOFWD is geared towards both littlies and grown ups - the take home dinners include Thomas the Tank Engine pasta with bolognese sauce, their organic deli range includes baby food for tiny diners who have entered the world of solids and babycino's and organic gingerbread people are a menu staple, to name but a few of the kiddie-pleasing options. For adults there are some delicious looking salads and healthy quiches and baked goodies that everyone will enjoy including muffins, slices and cookies. There's even organic doggie bone biscuits for your four legged companions!

Jeanette has just had a baby-change table installed in the toilets, there are plenty of colourful kids plastic tumblers and plates, two well-stocked toy boxes as well as some mini tables and chairs for the kids to sit at whilst they eat and play. So this café certainly caters for children in a big way. Combined with its position next to the tennis courts, its location within the park and its close proximity to the safe fenced in playground – this is a parents haven!

And while TOFWD has lifted the game of the humble old Orrong Kiosk – the basics are still covered. I reckon the coffee is now even better and you can still pick up the morning papers!

My only concern was a lack of a full breakfast menu – you know, good old eggs and bacon… but I have been advised that this is hopefully coming soon – the current kitchen is limited and requires a new fit-out before eggs and other hot breakfasts will be seen on the menu, so watch this space!

Finally, like me, you might have noticed the word ‘wine’ in the venue’s name! TOFWD – Prahran is currently in the process of applying for a license but it may take a couple of months. So, again watch this space. Cheers to that we say!

Please note that occasionally an enthusiastic dog will enter the seating space – there is no way to stop dogs visiting as this is a dog off leash park, so just be mindful of this with your little ones.

James Street Bakery has a lovely decor, set in an olde worldy style of dark woods, beautiful mirrors and lamps and a sense of French cool that the French do so well. And with a large red, white and blue flag hanging out the front and the knowledge that the master baker is French, you are pretty sure you’ve stumbled across the real deal.

There are wooden chairs and old tables dotted throughout with a large communal table at the front. The big windows look on to James Street with a high bar that is perfect for people watching. During the morning, we see arty types, grey haired brigades and local office workers meeting on the big table.

We take a seat on a miserable wet and dreary grey day. It immediately brightens when an expertly made Genovese coffee arrives alongside a bubbacino with two marshmallows. Happy mum + happy bub = happy day! We order poached eggs on housemade sourdough ($9.50) and French toast with raspberries and maple syrup ($10.50) both of which were great. The prices here are good and other offerings include Teadrop tea, Phoenix organic soft drinks and a gorgeously inviting display of pastries, slices, cakes and seriously popular muffins (blueberry and lemon or raspberry, white chocolate and hazelnut). There are also macaroons, canelles and loaves of sourdough behind the counter. Locals know which days that Laurent is baking which loaves so it is definitely worth asking the friendly staff for some inside knowledge.

James Street Bakery is open for breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon teas. Lunch options including chicken and avocado sandwiches, grilled paninis, baguettes, sourdough sandwiches (around $12) to $19.50 for a ploughman’s lunch. There are local wines available too.

The staff here are all delightful and definitely happy to entertain small people, but it is definitely not a mothers group catch up kind of place. James Street Bakery is simply a gorgeous place to stop a while for excellent baked goods, fabulous coffee and an all round lovely experience.

Sourdough Kitchen offers a quick, easy and affordable option for breakfast or lunch out with the family. With all menu items well under $7.50, you’ll have plenty of spare change from a pineapple (that’s a $50 note!)... normally at least what it costs for a family of two adults and two kids to enjoy weekend brunch at a cafe.

And Seddon locals have definitely discovered and welcomed this newish bakery come cafe, judging by the steady stream of local families and parents with prams coming through the front doors to pop in for a quick coffee and pastry or grab a loaf to take home.

There is a cute little kids vintage table and chairs, and some kids books scattered about to keep the little ones entertained while they wait for their $1 babycino with marshmallow and pastry of choice. While we settled in at the communal table on castors, with the weekend papers and a (very good) Genovese coffee each, our two made themselves right at home at the little table, and settled in with some books to read as well as coloured pencils, stickers and colouring books we always have on hand in the baby bag.

The water was brought over to the table with two glasses for us adults and two coloured plastic tumblers for the wee ones - a thoughtful touch. And whilst the cafe is spacious, and has ample room for at least a few prams and strollers, the amenities for tiny tots end there... no change table or highchairs. But hey, you can easily make do in this type of spot where the service is friendly and efficient, kids and babies are not out of place, and being a bakery the food comes out super fast. So a stop off at Sourdough Kitchen will be a quickie, but a goodie.

For breakfast or morning tea, choose from pain au chocolat, plum jam croissants, toasted apple and cinnamon scrolls, fruit buns and their famous sourdough croissant.

For lunch there are toasted or fresh sandwiches on your choice of Multigrain or Casalinga sourdough, pizza squares with various toppings including potato and rosemary, mushroom or roast pumpkin, and big, fat, homemade sausage rolls filled with either pork and fennel or chicken and leek and served with homemade chutney. Now thats comfort food!

You might also like to take a loaf home, with daily flavours including Olive, Spelt, Multigrain, Ciabatta, Rye, Pumpkin, Fig, almond and apricot, Onion and sage, Cornbread, or Sunflower cobb.

This simple no-frills local bakery with sparse decor and relaxed community vibe offers an affordable alternative for a family breakfast or lunch out. Or pick up a takeaway coffee, some pastries and treats and combine with a visit to one of our favourite parks around the corner on Gamon St. And perhaps a browse in some of Seddon’s best shops for little ones too, including Sedonia and Finch Emporium.

The original Brunetti on Faraday St in Carlton is a Melbourne institution, and if you are Melbourne born and bred then you have no doubt visited Brunetti at some stage, or at the very least have heard of their famous cakes and reputation.

Brunetti’s vastly expanding empire extends to a number of locations in the CBD, and most recently can now be found on the 3rd floor of the newly re-furbished and re-vamped Myer Melbourne. Brunetti is conveniently (and cleverly, or possibly even potentially dangerously) located on the same floor as the toy department, as well as the children's clothing and footwear department.

We have been here a handful of times now since it first opened and it is always busy, no matter the time of day. However after a quick scout around for a table for a couple of minutes a table has always been made available. So it may be busy and packed, but there is a fast turnover of customers which helps to free up tables. As per the original in Carlton it can be a tad tricky if you are on your own with kids and prams, as there is no table service.

Brunetti offers everything a tired toddler may need to re-fuel on a trip into town. Milkshakes and babycino’s to sip on, a scoop of gelati for an icy treat, macaroons in all the colours of the rainbow, doughnuts, pastries, cannoli, biscotti, strawberry tarts, chocolate eclairs... I could go on and on. For something more substantial there are pre-made piadina’s, baguette’s, ciabatta’s, and sandwiches and a special kids combo lunch deal with a ham and cheese toastie, a kids juice and a mini cake.

The babycino’s here are free... although they are always a little one the milky side, with not enough froth and, much to the disappointment of Little Miss Little Eats aka babycino connoisseur, are not served with a complimentary marshie on the side.

Brunetti offer a stack of highchairs, and the Myer parents room, located just across from Brunetti on the same floor, is new and spacious, offers baby change facilities, toilets, couches for breastfeeding, sink and microwave for heating bottles or preparing baby food, and even kiddie tunes playing on high rotation in the background.

Brunetti at Myer Melbourne brings a taste of Carlton to the CBD and is a good option for a quick pit-stop or nappy change and a place to re-fuel or treat (or bribe) your city-weary little ones to some sweet Italian goodness. That combined with the close proximity to the Toy department is guaranteed to perk them up again in no time!

I used to work in the city and I used to love trying out all the latest fabulous cafes... but that changed when my trips to town involved prams and toddlers – most of those places that were too cool for proper signage were also completely and utterly pram and kid un-friendly! And so good coffee’s in the city with kids has, till now, been limited to just a few venues, none which were ideal.

But yay, finally a venue that has easy access, good amenities including highchairs and baby change facilities, lots of space, a great vibe and fantastic coffee. Being part of the new Dining Hall (a fancy-pants term for food-court) in Melbourne Central means that most clientele are not there conducting business meetings – so if the kids run about or make a bit of noise no one even glances sideways. We sat right at the very back – looking out the windows at the street below and city skyline.

The food on offer is simple salads, sandwiches, baguettes, cakes, cookies, slices and pastries – but you’re in a food court so you are surrounded by many other options! And the food on offer at Plantation does look yum – we were there for a pit stop coffee but Charlie did have a cookie with his babycino, and it was gobbled up in no time.

Being the offspring of St Ali and Sensory Lab these guys take their coffee very seriously! There is a chalkboard with daily specials listed and the friendly staff are more than happy to talk you through what’s on offer (although there was no queue when we were there, so maybe if it was peak hour you might get less information).

The perfect pit stop for a city excursion.

Suits, trams, bluestone laneways, Federation Square, Flinders St Station, the Yarra river and graffiti... yep that's our beloved Melbourne CBD. But it's not all business in our central business district, there is lots of fun to be had by little ones too...

... think the NGV Kids Corner, Artplay, a visit to Santa followed by the Myer Christmas windows, a horse and carriage ride around town, a stroll along Southbank, storytime at the State Library, or simply just a ride on a train or tram and some people watching. Our city is so unique, so special, so vibrant, and this urban playground offers so much life, inspiration and colour, especially when viewed through the eyes of your little people.

The CBD is not traditionally known for offering up a huge serve of kid friendly cafes... however sometimes you just have to work with what you've got. They may not all have highchairs, baby change facilities, baskets full of toys, and kids menus... in fact, some may have none of these things at all, however they will have a warm and welcoming attitude to tiny patrons and will not just be frequented by dudes in black suits. Here are our top picks on where to stop to re-fuel when a day-trip into town is on the cards.

Chocolate. Croissants. Coffee. Three C words that are like music to my ears. You really don’t need a much better reason than these three Frenchie faves to visit this cool cafe.

Enter through the bright fire engine red front door, right next to other Brunswick cafe institution El Mirage, past the kids sized blackboard out the front announcing the hot choc and coffee du jour, and into the spacious old warehouse... and you will find a modern Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Brunswick style.

Thibault Fregoni, artisan chocolate maker and THE Monsieur Truffe, has recently opened his second venue, which is much larger and thus more family friendly than the Collingwood counterpart. But no orange faced Oompa Loompa’s here...

Being an old warehouse, the vibe is industrial chic, yet the combo of exposed brick, blonde wood, blossoms and bamboo is still warm and relaxed, light and airy. And it is an added bonus to be able to peer through the glass windows and be privy to the chocolate making process. There is ample space for prams to glide about, or park them if you wish in the dedicated space just inside the entrance for bikes and prams.

A fold down change table in the disabled loo, a single highchair (yep just the one, but it IS a trendy Scandi looking number), a couple of special kids menu items, organic gingerbread men, babycino’s and mini kid-sized hot choccies complete the kid friendly package.

Our little ones positively inhaled their kids blueberry pancakes, for just $6 they got three decent sized fluffy little pancakes full of whole berries, lightly dusted with icing sugar and with a little pot of stewed rhubarb on the side for dipping... who needs boring old maple syrup and vanilla ice-cream! Delicious, and possibly much better value than the same sized equally delicious strawberry and ricotta hotcakes on the adults menu for $14.

Other Frenchie inspired menu items for us bigger kids include a selection of both sweet and savoury from French Toast to Croque Monsieur, and the famous hot chocolates (with varying blends up to 85%) which are a must try are served in gorgeous Japanese ceramic cups with little wooden spoons to stir the chocolatey goodness around, and so you can lick off every last drop.

There is a sweet selection of books including a cute kids book “I love chocolate”, cards, notebooks, and chocolate for sale too - from bars, to bags, to hot chocolate powder and even fun little kids choccies including ladybugs and bumblebees, all artfully displayed on the front counter for little eyes to see, little hands to grab and little ones to want.

At the counter you will also be tempted by colourful macaroons, buttery, flakey pain au chocolat et croissants, cakes, pudding, biscuits and of course chocolate. Our little one had her eye on a “lellow” macaroon, but after blueberry pancakes, babycino’s and half of Maman’s pain au chocolat I think she had had enough... next time my love... and yup, there will definitely be a next time... as this Mamma had her eye on many more treats to try too!

Please note.... Expect a wait for a table on weekends as there are no bookings. However there is a little park and playground just up the road on the corner of Lygon and Blyth streets if you need to kill some time while you wait for a coveted table to become available.

Dining amongst the wooden wine barrels, these guys make a beautiful drop but the sheer size of the shed, the relaxed atmosphere, the gravelled terrace out the front and excellent wood fired pizzas make this the ultimate Sunday lunch experience for the whole family.

It is hard not to be biased about Clyde Park. Despite the fact that you are dining with many other people who have discovered this unique setting, there is still a feeling of contentment that makes you feel like you have uncovered a gem. And what a gem it is.

We ventured out with three small people on a Sunday afternoon for a lunch of wood fired pizza, great cool climate wines and some quality family time. We were greeted by host and owner Terry whose attitude of "what is the point of Sunday lunch if you can't share it with your kids" immediately puts you at ease. Terry generally runs the front of house along with cooking those crispy pizzas whilst his wife Sue tinkers away expertly in the kitchen.

When you hear the cow bell ring, it means your pizza is ready. Cute. We tucked into a gorgeous vegetarian pizza with Meredith goat’s cheese and an equally fabulous sticky pork combination (both $25). The kids were well fed with bambino pizzas – a decent size full of ham, cheese and pineapple – and homemade vanilla ice-creams arrived shortly after. The little flake on top was a cute touch and the chocolate sauce was delicious! Bigger kids are well satisfied with Gooey Chocolate Delight (an amazingly decadent brownie), Rhubarb Brulee Tart or a stunning cheese plate with muscatels and crackers.

This particular Sunday we are greeted with the sultry sounds of Angie Hilton – a local Geelong musician – and the girls start to shake their shoulders along to the beat. There are so many kids around, filing in family after family. And the best thing of all is that the shed is big enough to deal with all the inevitable squeals. There were prams for kids and dolls, bassinets for new bubs, Baby Bjorns, dolls, dummies, tantrums and toys and it all felt like it just blended in with the scenery.

The young wait staff in royal blue polo shirts, Dunlop volleys and jeans ooze big city cool in a country setting. The shed is lined with wine barrels, and dotted throughout are huge outdoor tables with branded Clyde Park blankets on offer to combat any chill. The decorating style is definitely influenced by France with candelabras, oversized French vintage posters and quirky wrought iron decorations.

There is a toy box for little ones but with the rolling hills of Moorabool Valley for the kids to explore and the potential of spotting goats or sheep, they are well entertained. A few older kids had footballs and were occupied for long enough for their folks to tuck in to expertly made pizzas and sensational wine.

The Cellar Door is open all weekend adding to the casualness of Clyde Park but also indicating how seriously they take their wine. They are after all a vineyard that decided to make a few pizzas! You’ll need to book as it gets really busy and do make a beeline for the toilets – they surely have the best view in the Valley!

And post lunch we took advantage of the winter sun and sat on the terrace for another glass of reserve pinot and watched whilst different combinations of kids with different combinations of parents came out to explore. Clyde Park is a terrific venue for lunches with kids and long lunches sans enfants. With a winning combination of excellent wine, great pizzas, lovely views and a family friendly attitude an afternoon at Clyde Park maketh a happy family day!

Nearly 30 years after opening Daylesford institution the Lake House, Alla Wolf-Tasker and team now bring us a more affordable, more casual, more relaxed venue... and a more suitable spot for visiting foodie families to dine when their little ones are in tow.

Situated in the middle of the picturesque Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens, in the old care-taker’s cottage, Wombat Hill House is by far (for me, and my travelling companions) THE stand-out cafe in this neck of the woods, and perhaps the best cup of coffee in Daylesford too (did someone say Single Origin?)... and not a single doily in site! Hurrah!

This cafe offers country style, charm and warmth, but it also still has the cool factor - All-press coffee, a fancy pants coffee machine that wouldn’t be out of place in an inner urban city cafe, groovy staff and a drool-worthy menu full of foodie faves and local produce including Red Beard Sourdough, Istra meats, Mt Zero olives, Jonesy’s milk and cream, Meredith yoghurt, O’toole’s honey and Alla’s very own “A wolf in the kitchen” jams and preserves.

With the late afternoon sunshine streaming down and just a hint of that cool crisp evening air starting to come through as the day ended, we popped in for afternoon tea. Fresh chai with honey and organic soy, espresso’s, babycino’s, and one killer Valrohna chocolate milkshake, all followed by brownies and blondies for the big kids, and a bag of gingerbread ducks for the wee ones. We were in love.

In love with immediate warmth the place offered and the overall relaxed vibe. In love with the food and menu, and in love with the fact that this place was so fresh and different to anywhere else in Daylesford we had dined, and so great for kids too.

Inside is cosy and homely, with various seating options including comfy couches with scatter cushions by the open fire place, which would be heaven to snuggle up on with a glass of Pinot in the winter time. And out the back was the space that the kids fell in love with... just a chilled out backyard vibe, amidst the kitchen garden where the chef’s and kitchen staff occasionally wandered out to pick a sprig of something or a pinch of that, Adirondack sun loungers, quirky country touches like the wheelbarrow and the gumboot rack and a good healthy dose of fresh country air.

The little ones ran about amongst the courtyard, playing with their new racing cars purchased with their own money that morning at the Daylesford Sunday market, and the littlest ones happily sat in their highchairs and scribbled away with the jars of coloured pencils and big A3 wombat colouring sheets that were provided.

We loved this place so much that a single visit just wasn’t enough, so on our last day, before heading back home to Melbourne, we stopped in again for spicy and refreshing Virgin Mary’s with horseradish and celery (we had consumed too much French champagne the night before to indulge in the bloody version), espresso, babycino’s and Brioche French Toast complete with poached pears, Meredith yoghurt, honey and walnut crumble.

With the unique Botanic Gardens location, the fun kitchen garden out back, highchairs, change table, coloured pencils, kid hit sweet treats including old school lollie bags, meringues, Belgian chocolate crackles and gingerbread biscuits, babycino’s, and other menu items that can easily be adapted for tiny tastebuds (think macaroni and cheese, and ricotta hotcakes), this spot definitely serves up a good dose of cafe culture for little ones.

Head there for breakfast, head their for brunch and a cheeky Prosecco, head there for a picnic (you can purchase “The Lunchbox” - a sandwich or baguette of your choice, Meredith yoghurt and poached fruit and a sweet treat slice from the daily bake and enjoy the glorious surrounds) or even head there for Sunday afternoon aperitivo. Whatever you do, just make sure you definitely head there on your next trip to Daylesford. You’ll love it too.

When the staff at The Cottage hand you a menu inside a Little Golden Book, you are pretty sure that they’ve got the kid welcome mat out. Once you get through the obligatory reading of Grover’s Christmas then little eats can get stuck into the ‘Grommets’ menu which is full of the usual suspects including ham and cheese toasties and pancakes as well as the cute ‘kids conquer la cottage’ big breakfast option. The chocolate milkshakes hit the mark at being size appropriate and the bubbacinos come with a side order of marshmallows.

There is a bit of dude-ish vibe at The Cottage with the uber-cool set meandering in for the all day breakfast. The wait staff are all pretty groovy in skinny black jeans but their friendliness counterbalances any notion of hipsterness. But it is the gorgeous courtyard out back that lends itself to such a relaxed vibe for families. It is set around a cute pond with goldfish, large wire tables with chairs made comfy with patches of fake grass and little blankets to take off any chill. There are umbrellas, outdoor heaters, a lovely big chiminea, fairy lights, garden artwork and music playing through the trees. Dog bowls are provided for canine cafe hoppers and the retro salt and pepper pots all add to the vibe. And as the courtyard is set upon pebbles you don’t really notice any mess on the ground although this can make it tricky to push a pram through.

It was a gloriously beautiful and sunny winter’s day when my three girls and I descended upon The Cottage at midday on match day at the nearby Geelong FC home stadium. Being heavily pregnant and without the moral support of my partner in crime who was working a farmers market, I was definitely apprehensive about my patience levels and the sometimes slow service that occurs at The Cottage. But despite the large crowd in navy blue and white scarves, service was slick and the girls were well behaved, hungry enough to eat well, occupied in the courtyard and I had a really, really lovely experience.

On the way out we happened upon the home made slices, sweet and savoury muffins. But it was the Ginger Ninjas that won out in the end and the three girls wandered back out into the sunshine with big smiles on their faces.

All in all The Cottage is a great place for families and pretty much has all the amenities to keep little ones entertained and adults satisfied with decent food. The coffee is Piazza d’Oro which I usually dislike but there is some seriously talented baristas on site as the coffee always tastes great. And they’re licensed too so if you need a beer with the Yankee Wagyu Cheeseburger that comes with fries in those old school paper cups with the newspaper print, then you’re set. Happy families, indeed.

The late morning sunshine was streaming through the windows, and the sassy, sultry, sexy voice of Adele was playing in the background, as we sat down to our brunch in the cosy back room at Pepper. This cafe had a great vibe already.

On a corner location, in the old Girdwood’s Hygenic Library (apparently an old lending library that fumigated books between borrowings ), on a quiet Flemington backstreet opposite the Newmarket train station sits this little gem of cafe, Pepper. Cute name too.

The vintage tables and chairs on the footpath were packed full with hip and groovy Rayban clad childless twenty-somethings as well as happy pram-pushing families out for brekkie. Inside was just as busy, with staff who looked as if they could have stepped straight from the pages of Frankie magazine buzzing about serving Sunday eggs and coffees.

We moseyed on through the cafe, past the orange painted chairs, the busy coffee machine and the mini etch-a-sketch’s cleverly used as signs for the muffin flavours and for tips, and made our way to the cosy back room. Complete with original floorboards and fireplace, windows opening on to the side street letting in fresh air and sunshine, and quirky art for sale, it had a very relaxed vibe, and we quite happily settled in to the banquettes relaxed and ready for coffees and eats.

One little one tucked up in a highchair happily drawing away (well, more like eating the coloured pencils) and another little one grooving away to the Adele tunes in front of the fireplace, her “stage”, Di Bella coffees and babycino’s all round and French toast with bacon and maple, house made muesli, stewed fruit and yoghurt and a kids ham and cheese sourdough toastie on the way. Life was good.

As well as the toasties, little ones can also munch on mini sausage rolls, or “The Little Champ” a toad in the hole with bacon and a sausage, smiley face cookies and other treats from the front counter and kids sized fresh juices and milkshakes served in coloured plastic tumblers.

A change table is located upstairs, and the upstairs room can also be booked for functions or mothers groups catch-ups.

The shop next door, Wild Jam, is also worth popping into after Pepper, you’ll find gorgeous homewares, accessories, hand made cards, clothes, toys and bits ‘n pieces for the little ones.

Pepper has the same owners as Oliver’s Garden cafe at Queen’s Park in Moonee Ponds, another fun, family friendly spot worth a visit and a play.

What a little treasure Hickinbotham is! My family is a big fan of this place as it is small and down to earth, but with a big heart... and that’s why we love it.

Hickinbotham of Dromana is that little cottage that always makes me smile as it sits humbly on top of the hill. Since having our girls, we rarely visit wineries anymore, however when we do, this is the place we go, because it’s simple and homely.

The staff are happy to see you and ready to accommodate the kids in every way, they definitely have the kids department covered… there are a couple of highchairs (which can also be booked), different activities around the grounds to keep the kiddies entertained such as ‘Bertie’ the huge horse who cheekily hangs around the paddock close to the kitchen backdoor waiting for a spare carrot or two, the ‘happy face’ cubbyhouse which is surrounded by a little garden where they can kick a ball, the track next to the vines and on Sundays there is a little band playing upbeat tunes (check out the website for the ‘what’s on’ schedule).

The menu is excellent for everyone, the portions and prices are reasonable but most importantly the dishes are tasty and homely. During lunch the girls explored their surroundings and would come back for more which is a true testament that they loved their choice of fish and chips and spaghetti bolognese from the children's menu.

Hickinbotham of Dromana is located in the Mornington Peninsula region and approximately 60 mins from CBD, so an easy day-trip out of town. Or, you will find plenty of accommodation nearby so you can make a weekend of it, and take your time to visit the Peninsula spas, the Enchanted Maze and the beach.

Don’t forget to try my favourite ‘Strawberry Kisses’, a Hickinbotham specialty of sweet sparkling goodness – pucker up and cheers to this little gem for creating a great environment for both adults and kids.

How often do you eat out at cafes and restaurants with your little ones?

The little ones and I have a treat at our local café once a week, which I adore and introduced for each of them from a young age. We rarely go out to restaurants and instead enjoy yummy meals together at home on the weekends.

Do you eat out more or less often since you have had kids? Why is that?

I definitely eat out less. Before kids, I loved going out for brunch and dinner every weekend, as well as other nights of the week when it took my fancy. Sipping a latte over the morning paper or maintaining a deep conversation over dinner is my idea of a good time, but it’s not the same for the little ones, so I have those times at home these days.

Do you have any horror stories or embarrassing moments that have happened when eating out at cafes with your little ones?

There have been moments when something inappropriate has been said loudly or I’ve worn their food or drink as things were knocked over, but I don’t think of it as a horror story. We all have those moments when we say something we shouldn’t and days when we’re a little more distracted or clumsy than usual and accidents happen.

Do you have any tips for taking little ones to Cafes?

I don’t expect the little ones to behave like adults and sit still at the table having hushed conversations and a three-course meal. There will be laughter, noise and activity so I take them to cafes that are kid-friendly where they can play a game of snap and giggle at each other’s silly knock-knock jokes. Having said that, I don’t allow them to run wild and be disruptive to other patrons so we don’t go out when they’re full of energy - those are the days for a takeaway coffee and a walk to the park.

We also go out for morning or afternoon tea rather than meals as I don’t expect them to sit still for a long period – there’s too much fun to be had to be stuck in a chair and I find there’s a time limit before they become restless. Practice makes perfect so even if we have an outing doesn’t go to plan, we try again.

I prepare by making sure I have games, books, pens, and so on in my bag for those moments of boredom and will often let them choose a toy to bring along.

The other terrific advice I heard that I like to keep in mind is what Little Eats wrote in our first issue – “Relax... last but not least, no one is judging you so remember to relax, enjoy, laugh and just have fun with your family.” Such true words and we live by this.

What is your favourite kid-friendly Melbourne Cafe?

We love our local café, Mr Percival in Malvern East. The service is friendly, the books and activities for little ones are pounced on by my boys every visit, the coffee is yummy and according to my boys, their kids milkshakes made with bio-dynamic unhomogenised milk are “the best milkshake I ever had”.

We usually go out to brunch on a sunday morning as a family, and occasionally Emma and I head out for milkshakes or a dumpling lunch through the week.

Do you eat out more or less often since you have had kids? Why is that?

Much less often. Before Emma was born we would probably eat dinner out 3-4 nights a week, and breakfast and lunch on the weekends too. Now unless it’s for an occasion we rarely head out to dinner. If we do its always quite an informal setting and an early tea. I‘m very conscious of disturbing other diners, I don’t want to spoil their experience. Maybe as Emma gets older we will go out to dinner more.

Do you have any horror stories or embarrassing moments that have happened when eating out at cafes with your little ones?

Apart from being embarrassed by the huge mess a toddler creates, I must say we have been pretty lucky so far. Emma loves her food so as long as it comes out quickly there are usually not too many hysterics.

Do you have any tips for taking little ones to Cafes?

I have wiggles videos loaded up in my iPhone. It has saved the day when we are at places that don’t really have any toys or books to distract the little ones.

What is your favourite kid-friendly Melbourne Cafe?

We have a few local haunts that are within walking distance from home, so we are quite lucky. But for delicious food that Emma and I love it has to be Gourmet Dumpling Restaurant on Glenferrie Rd, Malvern. The food comes out quickly and Emma’s appetite for dumplings is insatiable. We try to go during quite periods as it can get really busy. There is no entertainment for the kids per se but the staff are quite accommodating. Bring your own booster seat.

If you stand on your tip toes and stretch real tall you can grab a cloud from here. It is a fairy and pixie adventure playground without the rollercoasters and spinnatron, instead a hedge maze, wishing tree, bubbles and open gardens to explore and run around.

SkyHigh has two different dining options (as well as a buffet on Sunday). The Bistro is located on the lower ground with indoor and outdoor tables. Breakfast, lunch or dinner is available here or simply order a coffee and cake. There is also a little quick café up the top of the hill just before you buy your tickets to enter the maze. On Sundays, the functions room upstairs is open for a roast buffet followed by traditional tea and scones, but you must book as it does get busy (they have a great online booking system too). But if none of the dining options appeal to you, you can bring your own picnic or BBQ and enjoy it while sitting on the green spongy lawns.

The staff are great, service with a genuine smile, there was no request too small or too big for them (I am guessing they are locals and who would be stressed if you lived in this part of town…) With 4 kids (not all mine!) the requests were plentiful and with 3 of them running around I was amazed and thankful that there were no raised eyebrows. There are plenty of high chairs and food options for kids as well as the kids activity pack which you’re given when you order from the kids’ menu….great way to keep them entertained.

The grounds are surrounded by beautiful tall trees and an unforgettable views. There are bridges, fountains, statues, carvings, the huge giant’s chair and so much more to see. The toilets are clean and plenty of them…kids change facilities are located in the disabled toilets in the Bistro and everything is very clean and roomy.

SkyHigh is approximately 50 mins from Mebourne's CBD or you can arrange traditional or modern accommodation where you can enjoy everything this area has to offer such as local craft, antique and wooden toy shops.

Ok, lets’s just get it out in the open... this corner cafe just scraped in with 3 milkshakes out of 5. Cute name, cute fit-out, cute looking staff... not so cute service. And that black hair (I am blonde) in my hotcakes? Definitely not cute either!

Our experience at Milk Cloud was rather hit and miss... and left me thinking about “what could have been”. It could have been good. Really good. Especially as there is not much else even remotely fun or funky on this Ashburton strip. And Milk Cloud is trying so hard to be just that. East side Mamma’s are crying out for more cool kid-friendly cafes a la the inner North and West, and this one has so much potential... but is just not quite there yet.

As far as cafe culture for little ones goes, Milk Cloud does seem to be a popular haunt for local brunching families, as there were a quite a few toddlers scattered about the place and babes in prams when we were there, not too mention quite a few of the grey hair brigade too. From one extreme to the other!

Anyway, they have a good little kids menu with everything from grilled cheese on toast, peanut butter sandwich triangles, pizza, mini cupcakes, mini milkshakes and babycino’s with 100’s and 1000’s... although for some reason ours were bare, but on our way out I noticed another little girl drinking her 100 and 1000 clad cino. Very inconsistent.

There were also boxes of coloured pencils and colouring in books, however the staff did not offer them to us... I only noticed them when we had to get up and help ourself to the menu’s, so then I helped myself to them too. My little one did love drawing in the Toy Story colouring-in book though while she waited for her ham and cheese toastie... as it is all about Buzz and Woody right now. To infinity and beyond!

Without nit-picking, and boring you by going in to all the details, in a nutshell the service was pretty bad. The staff were clearly Sunday casual’s, rather than seasoned hospitality professionals, and their hearts just weren’t in it. The service was inconsistent - one waitress was kinda sweet, and the other one the complete opposite, and the so-called “manager”, well that’s a whole other story! The ordering and seating system is clunky, and it was not explained to us that you need to order and pay at the counter, instead we were left sitting as solo diners upstairs without menus (also where the kitchen is located) wondering what the deal was.

They have highchairs too, no change table but a spacious loo downstairs with plenty of room to wheel in the pram to change bubs if need be. The upstairs area offers more space for families to spread out on a large communal table and cool replica Tolix chairs, or the little tables and small stools over by the bright grafitti wall mural where the wee ones could sit and draw. You just have to be watchful of the stairs, and it could be a bit tricky getting the pram up the stairs too.

It’s located on a large corner site, right near the train line, and is probably the most spacious, colourful, contemporary and fun looking cafe on this strip, so naturally it attracts the brunch with baby set. And with the highchairs, kids menu, mini milkshakes, pencils and colouring in books, they are clearly happy to welcome families and are targeting that clientele. They just need to lift their game, sort our their service, and smooth things out a bit. And then I think it could be good. Really good. (Oh and maybe the person in the kitchen with the black hair should wear a hair-net too!) :)

How often do you eat out at cafes and restaurants with your little ones?

Probably 2 or 3 times a week. It’s always just for coffee or a quick breakfast. Very rarely for dinner.

Do you have any horror stories or embarrassing moments that have happened when eating out at cafes with your little ones?

We tried to have a yummy dinner at Hu Tong in Prahran with Aggie just before Beatrix was born. We ordered and the food came quickly but Aggie was tired and started having a tantrum. She was so noisy and unbearable all the other patrons were giving us bad looks. We quickly whisked her out of there and asked for the food in take away containers. It was a very expensive take away experience and one not worth repeating.

Do you have any tips for taking little ones to Cafes?

Bring a few books and toys with you or even better still some Play Doh. Anything to entertain them for a few minutes!

It was a Saturday morning (well late morning) Mummy had had a few vino’s with her sis the night before and was feeling a little foggy, we had stayed in our jim-jams for too long and missed the boat to head out for breakfast. And to be honest, the tea and toast at home had just not sufficed. So off we all went to Oliver’s Garden for a very late breakfast, which actually ended up being an early lunch, some caffeine and some fresh air.

With the toddlers eyes on the prize (the playground) we thought it would be wise to sit and eat inside first, then head outside after for a play, otherwise there would have been no hope in trying to get her to leave the slide for a minute to sit down at the table and eat.

Inside the heritage listed building, which is like an old country homestead, it is quite small and cosy, with room for just a couple of prams. It was warm and relaxed, and the crackling open fire and the cruisy jazz playing in the background added to the casual country-esque vibe.

Ordering was easy... it was well and truly lunch time by now, so it was two latte’s, two foccacia’s, two babycino’s (served in mini paper coffee cups to prevent breakages and with a marshie on the side), and for the little one’s seeing as it was the weekend (and treats are always aplenty on the weekend) a toastie to share, followed by a serve of Tinkerbelle bread to share. This was a huge hit, especially as we have a new pink fairy door that our garden fairies use to enter in the night and deliver little surprise pressie’s, notes and treats for the little ones to discover in the morning. So anything fairy related at the moment goes down well.

As well as the fairy bread, tiny patrons can tuck into special kids sandwiches or toasties with all the usual fillings eg: ham and cheese or peanut butter and honey, mini sausage rolls, chippies (yes, the fried variety), spaghetti bolognese, or eggs on sourdough toast. There are also all kinds of sweet treats to indulge in from mini cupcakes to lemon slice, to chocolate fudge brownies to freshly baked muffins.

This cafe is very well-equipped for families, with highchairs, baby change facilities, coloured plastic tumblers for the kids drinks, a good little kids menu, and of course the awesome location in the centre of Queen’s Park overlooking the lake. There is a playground right next door, a window in the cafe to order from outside, and plenty of tables outside so you can enjoy your Di Bella coffee in the fresh air, and watch over the kids safely playing in the playground. There is also another playground (newer, more adventure playground style) just a little further around the lake. Then there are the ducks, geese, birds and other wildlife around that you can look at and learn about, just please don’t feed them as the signs say... as it is not good for their tummies. (Feeding them bread causes poor bone development, malnutrition and excessive thirst).

Because of the location, this cafe is truly family friendly, and would go off in summer, when everyone is out and about rocking the park! A great spot to visit when you all need to re-fuel or a hit of caffeine, and the little ones need to burn some energy and run wild.

Oliver’s Garden also offer traditional high teas with all the trimmings - ribbon sandwiches, macaroons, cupcakes, scones and bubbly, (perhaps a nice treat for a baby shower, Mother’s Day, or even something fun to do with a group of other Mummies). They also offer kids birthday parties too.

This has got to be one of the warmest, laidback, kiddie-loving cafes around town. It’s not obvious or mainstream in it’s kid-friendly approach, but what this understated cool cafe does offer is such a relaxed environment where tiny patrons are just as important and just as welcome as their adult counterparts. Nothing is over the top here, but instead, is just perfect in its simplicity.

We arrived (me, the two little ones, and my partner in crime for the day, the “manny”) and were greeted by the owner carrying his gorgeous little toddler daughter on his hip. She was a part of the cafe the entire time we were there - playing with my little ones, running around the cafe charming other customers, engaging with other staff members and playing peekaboo with takeaway coffee cups. Just too damn cute.

Everything here (the staff, the menu, the fit-out) is top quality, but still has a very laidback, go with flow, understated approach. There is no specific kids menu with cutsey named items, but instead they are super flexible with the menu and are more than happy to adapt dishes for tiny taste-buds, offer half serves and make little toasties. There are no common Ikea Antilop highchairs here, but a well loved vintage one instead. No separate baby change room, but a fold down change table in the loo out the back. No pre-made gingerbread-men in plastic wrappers, but home made mini versions with just the one smartie instead. The perfect size, in my opinion, for a little sweet treat. Just a taste, and enough to be enjoyed, but not too much.

While we tucked into our breakfasts, our little ones barely sat with us at the table (except to devour their babycino, just perfect, not too milky and with a towering foamy top) and kept escaping to play in kids corner. And why wouldn’t they, when it’s complete with mini wooden table and vintage chairs, all kinds of fun toys, books, paper and coloured pencils. Being family run, and with other parents and little ones as customers too, we knew they were safe and not annoying other customers as they skipped between our table and the mini table. It meant we were able to sit back, relax and enjoy the excellent coffee and food; Jacks breakfast for me (toast, eggs, haloumi, relish, avocado and spinach) and dukkah eggs for the manny.

Being West Preston, it attracts young, hip families, who have bought out that way after perhaps renting closer north-side (Brunswick, Fitzroy etc), but being West Preston and at the end of the infamous 112 tram line (literally, as the last stop is right out the front), it also attracts a slightly more random and colourful clientele. Old one tooth McGee (just made that name up for the sake of the story, but he did only have the one tooth. Yep, just the one) was out the front having a coffee and a ciggie and we had a good old chit chat whilst I was taking some happy snaps. This is all just part of this cafes quirky charm.

Other quirky touches are visible in the fit-out, an upside down retro trike hanging from the ceiling, little toy aeroplanes hanging above the coffee machine, original exposed brick walls, a huge graffiti art mural outside, and a shadow box full of trinkets and collectables.

An excellent choice in cafe for north side families on the hunt for quality coffee, top notch food, and a warm and unique environment. Love it.

Note - New owners have recently taken over Jackson Dodds, but never fear they are a lovely family too, and will be keeping everything just as it was before.

I am loving these two-part reviews at the moment. Just recently it was Gusto at Barkly, and now it’s Amorosa, where in the name of research, we visit a venue twice... for breakfast and babycinos AND then din-din’s too.

Willy locals are spoilt for choice on this little strip, just a stones throw from the water... Ferguson St Provisions just a couple of doors down, and then right next to that the trendy Pickle Barrel (same owners as Newport’s The Pint of Milk). But if you need space... for prams, strollers, larger groups, multiple kids, then Amorosa is definitely your best bet.

It’s really quite cool inside, very spacious, polished concrete floors, lots of red, white and green, large communal tables running down the middle, smaller tables with replica Tolix stools in front of the bi-fold windows, and huge murals of Italiano cartoons, funny quotes, sayings and poems on the walls... “When the world seems to shine like you’ve had too much wine, that’s Amorosa”. Cute.

The kidlets here are well looked after. To entertain them before their meal, they are given little tubs of crayons and Amorosa colouring in sheets with butterflies and pussy-cats, some masterpieces from previous tiny diners are proudly displayed on the wall too. For breakfast they are happy to do smaller serves of eggs and pancakes for the wee ones, and there is a special kids menu for lunch and dinner, which like the adults starts off with antipasto (arancini, calamari), followed by secondi (chicken parmigiana and chips), then pasta (lasagne, bolognese), pizza and then dolce (gelato, mini chocolate mousse) plus kid size juices and milkshakes. Highchairs are aplenty, there is heaps of room for prams and the babycinos, which were more like mini hot chocolates, were a hit with our little ones.

We loved our breakfast there, and the coffee and service were great too. I had the sweet corn fritters (sans bacon) with tomato and avocado salsa and sour cream, and they were good, damn good. My little ones enjoyed sharing it with me too. I would definitely order it again if we return, and I am sure we will, as it is located in our new ‘hood. We were full and happy after our breakfast, however being the big foodies and major sweet tooth’s that we are, we popped around the corner afterwards to The Cupcake Queens (another new fave in our new hood) and picked up some cheeky cupcakes to enjoy in the park for morning tea. Other yummy breakfasty items on the menu include a breakfast pizza, ricotta pancakes, house made baked beans and Eggs Benedict.

After our delicious brunch, and hearing a friend rave about the potato pizza, we simply had to head back for pizza for tea. We opted for a couple of pizzas from the traditional menu which were good. I do love my fancy-pants gourmet pizza toppings, but sometimes you just feel like keeping it real with good old simple pizza toppings. And they offer both... from classic Capriccosa to the fancier Italian regional pizzas including the Emilia-Romagna with prosciutto, goats cheese, fresh tomato, olives, thyme and extra virgin olive oil - there is something for every pizza lover to enjoy. Then there’s the antipasto, insalata, pasta, risotti and secondi... everything you need for an Italian banquet with the familia.

On a wet and cold Sunday morning, we pulled on our gumboots, jumped in the car and headed out for some puddle-jumping and splashing followed by a big breakfast and a much needed hit of caffeine.

A lot of other west-side families and couples had the same idea, as considering the weather, the cafe was practically full. Perhaps because there is nothing really else like Gusto in West Footscray and that locals have been crying out for a decent feed and cup of coffee for a while now, and have as a result welcomed Gusto with gusto!

And why wouldn’t they? With quality food and coffee, foodie favourites including Istra bacon, Zeally Bay bread, Mt Zero olives, T2 tea, Coffee Supreme and Bonsoy, and a casual venue that easily combines coffee and brunch and pizza and wine, it is fast becoming a local favourite. Local Mums flock here during the week for coffees and free babycino’s, and families can enjoy anything from a big weekend brunch through to an early pizza tea.

The breakfast menu is pretty standard - big cooked breakfasts, porridge and fruit toast. Lunch, dinner, and snacks in between include antipasto, eggplant chips, pumpkin ravioli, lamb ragout with parpadelle, Turkish pides, Sicilian meatballs, risotto and of course pizza.

A couple of weeks after our original breakfast visit, this Mamma needed a night off from cooking, so we were back again for din-din’s. The pizza was good, not the best I have had, but then again I have eaten a LOT of pizza, and I am very fussy with how I like it. Pizza is one of those personal things where everyone’s tastes can vary so much, and everyone has their own preferences on how they like it - the base, the toppings, the sauce, the cheese. The pizza menu is split into three sections Pizza Rosso (red base), Pizza Bianchi (white base) and Pizza Traditional. They also offer gluten free bases. With space for a few prams, highchairs, and a the ability to have tea at the family friendly time of 5.00pm, it is a hit with local families at din-din's time.

There is a Wee Breakfast section on the menu - an egg with bacon on sourdough toast, house baked beans on toast, or for the little sweeties a strawberry pancake with ice-cream. No kids menu for lunch or dinner, but the “medium” sized pizza is actually very small and would be a good size for a little one to enjoy their Hawaiian or Margarita. There are mini milkshakes for $2.50, Nudie juices and of course the free babycino’s.

The owners are friendly and accommodating, and although they do not have children of their own, they understand that young families make up such a big part of this growth suburb in the inner west, and as a result are warm and welcoming to little ones and families.

There are even more plans in the pipeline to make the space have a stronger kid-focus, with perhaps a blackboard and chalk in the outside walkway, and the development of a safe, enclosed back courtyard area. Stay tuned.

Not only are they kid-friendly, but also Bulldog-friendly too. (As in the football team). So if that’s your thing, sorry but it ain’t mine, then you can also grab yourself a special members deal or discount.

And if you ever happen to be “sans enfants” and need a spot for a coffee and some laptop time, there is free wifi too.

The White Rabbit is a very busy place. Luckily Mum had booked a table for breakfast because so many people were there too.

The lady was very nice to us and told us that there were no kids menus for breakfast. That didn’t really matter to me as I had eggs and bacon and toast anyway.

She told us though that there is a kids menu at night for hoppy hour (get it?) and she showed us and it really looks yummy. You can have pizzas, spaghetti, pasta, chicken and fish and super sundaes with sprinkles. If you go before 6.30pm you get your dinner and a sundae and a drink for $10! Bargain!

The chairs were high and comfy with pillows. There are loads of activities to do here, like word searches and make your own pizza drawings and lots of textas to do work while you are waiting for your food.

I ordered the iced chocolate which was creamy and yum. The bacon and eggs and toast were delicious and I finished it all!

You can use a high chair if you like.

I agree with Mum that it would be a great place to meet with our friends for an early dinner.

But the best thing about the White Rabbit is that it is right on the railway line – so you can watch trains all day long! ( and order some carrots…)

You know that you’ve stumbled across a pretty kid friendly place when the owner is chatting to regulars with a small bub on their hip! In fact, it is just friendly full stop. Business men, hipsters, mums and middle-aged women came and went grabbing a coffee, stopping for a while and all being greeted enthusiastically and mostly by name. What a lucky neighbourhood!

It’s a clean, well-planned space with a big communal table in the front window, a community notice board, great house made cakes and sweet treats, local teas from Leaf Tea and coffee from Geelong roaster Origin Coffee. There are some gorgeous hand painted murals adorning the walls, a toy box for little ‘uns, high chairs, great food and a relaxed and comfortable vibe.

My little one went straight for the ‘tana toast’ which translates to fruit bread and was served with French butter and raspberry jam. She also devoured her bubbacino that was...wait for it...FREE! And when she accidentally knocked the first one over another appeared with a minimum of fuss. My avocado on toast craving was well satisfied with a side order of bacon to round it out. Add a long black that was not too hot and it was a happy breakfast indeed. Then Miss 2 decided that she needed a berry and chocolate muffin as breakfast #2 so I ordered another long black and she played peek-a-boo with the other little eats who had ventured out in the glorious winter sunshine. Other breakfast menu offerings include Moriac eggs whipped into an omelette with house made Worcestershire sauce, sweet corn fritters, pancakes and granola. Lunch includes soups, club sandwiches plus some changing specials. Kids are well catered for with healthy options including fruit salad or baby carrots with hummus or soft boiled eggs with toast soldiers.

Chatting to the owner – a mumma of four – it is obvious that there is a lot of love at Gobble. ‘It’s all about having a conversation with the customer’, she declared indicating that if a kid just wants a Vegemite sandwich then that is not a problem for them to make. All the cakes and sweet treats are made in house and the mandarin cake is excellent as is the pear and vanilla. My little one spotted a large jar of hundreds and thousands cookies but after two breakfasts, I managed to distract her with more toys. Gobble is also known for its homemade gelato so it makes a great stop in the warmer months to grab an ice cream and head to the nearby Botanical Gardens.

I really wanted to give Gobble Food + Coffee five milkshakes out of five but unfortunately the toilets are located opposite in the public block. The owners couldn’t install them onsite without customers walking through the kitchen. The lack of loos isn’t a problem for most but it is a shame because this place just screams bring your kids because they’ll love them as much as you do. East Geelong residents are very fortunate that Gobble food + coffee are in their locale. In an area that doesn’t offer a lot in the way of cafes, the Gobble outfit has set a great benchmark.

Gobble Food + Coffee offer kids cooking parties when the shop closes making cupcakes, pizzas and sausage rolls. Kids get to munch on fruit whilst waiting for them to bake.

What a lovely way to while away a few hours on a sunny Sunday!

First stop, a big breakfast upstairs in the cafe, sitting on the verandah taking in the beautiful view, enjoying the fresh air and feeling the sunshine on our faces. Second stop another round of coffee’s, babycino’s and a sneaky gingerbread man, this time take-away from the kiosk downstairs. Third stop, down by the river, feeding the ducks, the geese and the annoying pigeons. Then lots of walking, playing, laughing, chasing, a trip across the swing bridge (don’t look down between the cracks - aahhhh!), and lots of sliding and swinging in the playground on the other side of the river.

Upstairs in the cafe, you’ll find highchairs, baby change facilities, ample space for prams (after just a few steps to get upstairs), accommodating staff that are clearly used to groups and families, and a couple of special menu items for the tiny patrons - kids hotcakes with ice-cream and maple syrup or kid’s eggs on toast with bacon and a hash-brown.

And for us adults, the breakkie menu includes the famous Rowers breakfast which is pretty much everything a big, burly rower (or a sleep deprived Daddy) would need to keep them going all day - eggs anyway, toast, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms and hash-browns. There’s also scrambled eggs with salmon, gluten free corn cakes with avocado and ricotta, house-made buttermilk pancakes and a selection of freshly baked pastries and fruit breads.

The cafe is a lovely spot for breakfast, lunch or even Devonshire tea, but due to the beautiful surrounds and slightly touristy nature of the venue it can get busy, so it’s a good idea to try and plan ahead and make a booking on weekends.

The Kiosk downstairs is a much more casual affair, where the service is fast, and coffee’s are served in take-away cups. Walk up to the counter, place your order, and in return you get one of those funky buzzers (a la Brunettis) that will beep when your order is ready. To munch on, treats include muffins, biscuits, cakes, slices, croissants, pastries and gingerbread men. And for lunch or something a little more substantial choose from ham and cheese toasties, pre-made baguettes and sandwiches and pies. And in true kiosk form, there’s ice-creams and lollies.

Studley Park Boathouse is a little oasis for families, in the heart of inner city suburb Kew. It offers urban families a little slice of country life in a very relaxed setting. The food and coffee here is fine - not outstanding or "wow factor", but totally fine. A visit here should be more about the "experience" and the total package, not just the food and coffee, because as a whole, this really is a great spot for little ones and offers something a little bit different.

A super spot for a Mother’s Group mid-week coffee catch-up, a weekend picnic or BBQ with a group of other families, a special occasion Sunday lunch or Devonshire Tea, or just a nice breakfast with hubby and the kids and a good way to spend a few hours together enjoying the great outdoors.

Oh, and being a boathouse, of course there is boat-hire too!

On the edge of Hawksburn Village is recent addition Hobba – named after the owner’s father. It is the full package, where others (and there are many many others nearby, all of which we have tried) just fail to tick all the boxes.

It has a simple yet stylish charm – its interiors are restrained, functional and cool, but this coolness is born from the form following function, as opposed to trying too hard! There is also a sense of fun – the communal table at the back has an established tree growing out of the middle of it.. reaching up to the clear panels in the roof. The combination of these panels and the wall of windows across the front of the building ensure loads of natural light.

The large space is broken up into different spaces. The front is more traditional café layout (this feels like the quiet, more intimate area with tables for two), the centre is occupied by a series of booths which are snuggled together and suggest a more comfortable spot for dinners who are settling in for a long breakfast/lunch and towards the back of the room are a number of large communal tables – for the rabble! It is also at the back of the room where a blackboard is strategically mounted on the wall and accompanied by an antique school desk filled with papers and crayons.

There is plenty of access for prams, hey this might be one of the few venues in town where double prams can glide effortlessly around (but I didn’t have one on hand to test that theory out – so just an educated guess!).

The coffee and food are good; the coffee is one of the best in the neighbourhood. Head chef Josh Powell’s pedigree includes stints at Vue de Monde, Circa and famed UK eatery Fat Duck. I ate the smashed avocado with feta and it was very tasty on a delicious grain bread. My husband was feeling adventurous and had the bubble and squeak and said it was ‘really good’. I have to say I snuck in a brownie and that was absolutely to die for… my new guilty pleasure!

The kids menu was really reasonable with items $5-6 and includes baked beans on toast, ham and cheese toasted soldiers and any style egg on toast. And all the juices are freshly squeezed.

To top it all off the staff are all really friendly and accommodating and the brand new bathrooms had the yummy Grown hand wash – the five year old was insisting we all sniff her hands, which is not something I usually do lightly after trips to public toilets!

Hobba might just be my new home…

As other parents with young toddlers, you can probably relate to this... we ROCK the park. All day, every day, any day! Anything to help tire out those energetic, boisterous, inquisitive, busy, crazy, little babes so they’ll have a decent afternoon nap! (And you can enjoy some much needed me time, to, you know, fold the washing, hang out the washing, do some more washing, do the ironing, get tea organised, tidy up the toys yadda, yadda, yadda). So grabbing a take-away caffeine hit on your way to the park, or heading out for a spot of morning or afternoon tea after a play in the park, or meeting another Mum for a picnic in the park, often forms part of a weekly (sometimes even daily) ritual for parents of toddlers.

Phoenix Park Cafe is conveniently located, at, you guessed it, Phoenix Park. And Phoenix Park certainly is heaven for toddlers, little ones... and even older school-aged kids too. It’s a massive wooden adventure playground, that is fenced in, safe and secure and has a wide variety of fun activities to suit all ages, including sandpit, swings, climbing ropes, swing bridge, climbing forts and more. But what our musical little ones liked the best were the chiming bells.

The food here is simple and easy, with a focus on light lunches and snacks, and a good selection that can also be enjoyed by tiny diners too. Sandwiches, toasties, foccacias, gourmet pies, quiche and soup are served up for lunch, while a selection of cakes, muffins, biscuits and treats are a perfect accompaniment to a T2 tea, an organic coffee, a milkshake or a babycino. With a slightly kiosky vibe too, there are of course drinks, ice-creams, chips and lollies that can be quickly and easily purchased and then enjoyed al fresco in the playground.

The service is simple and friendly and they are completely used to lots of petite patrons, there are kids and families everywhere, there are highchairs, changing facilities, crayons and paper for the kidlets, and an overall relaxed, casual community vibe. This is partly also because of the location, which includes the cafe and playground, as well as community centre, library, skate park, BBQ and picnic areas. It really is a community hub.

Phoenix Park Cafe is just a hop, skip and a jump away from The Fashion Capital (ie: Chaddy), so it makes for a good pit-stop for your little ones to get some fresh air and to run wild after being dragged around an air-conditioned shopping centre. It’s also a Birthday party/function venue, and a popular spot for Mother’s Group catch-ups.

If you are after a foodie extravaganza complete with a single-origin fancy-pants coffee in a hipster cafe with a cool vibe, then this ain’t the cafe for you. But if you are happy to just “keep it real” and enjoy some simple cafe fare with your cuppa, combined with that much-need park and playground visit then this cafe is a good choice. And the kids will no doubt love you for it!

Petitou is a very cute, local Kingsville cafe. Kingsville you say? You know, Kingsville, the not so well known little sister to trendy neighbouring Yarraville, and super-cool Seddon.

At this laid-back little local haunt, parents and non parents can co-exist in peace and enjoy the relaxed vibe in this west-side cafe. Out the front you can sit at the large communal table, catch up on the latest newspapers, and enjoy a cup of of Jasper coffee or a T2 tea with your breakkie or lunch.

And if little ones are in tow, then you will no doubt be drawn to the cosy back play-room, which is just like being in someones very own lounge room. Mums can relax on the comfy couches, flick through a trashy mag and enjoy a well earned cuppa, the bubs can relax and roll around on the soft and safe play-mat, while the toddlers will have a blast rummaging through baskets of toys. Both our little ones kept digging around and finding all sorts of gems from a little Shrek toy through to our old fave Upsy Daisy. There’s also a blackboard and chalk, books, sweet local art for sale on the walls, and a community noticeboard chock full of flyers for local events and services.

Staff and owners here are very welcoming to children and are happy to step around toddlers playing on the floor and navigate through the mass of toys strewn about in the back room. I was having a mild heart attack every time the waitress came in with a hot latte for a mum or plates of food, but they are clearly used to this sort of disorder and happily glided through, smiling and chatting away as they safely delivered the orders.

The menu here is small, but is quite perfect in it’s simplicity. It’s fresh, homely food that won’t break the bank - all menu items are under $7.50. For breakfast think creamy porridge and fruit compote, avocado smash on organic sourdough or fruit toast, for lunch paninis, old school jaffles, or a bowl of soup of the day and for morning tea I recommend the chocolate brownie. The kidlets are treated to a special menu too, with home-made sausage rolls (which are perfect for little ones as there are lots of veggies hidden inside), ham and cheese toasties, baked bean jaffles and treats including gingerbread men and smartie cookies. Mini milkshakes and hot chocolates are thoughtfully served in un-breakable coloured plastic tumblers, and of course babycino’s complete with marshies are just $1.

Highchairs, a fold down change table in the loo, and the small range of kids bits and pieces for sale (hair-clips, shoes, art) complete the kid and parent friendly package. The back room can also be booked for kids birthday parties or for mothers group catch-ups.

For a casual, simple and affordable spot, where your little munchkins will be completely welcomed (and completely happy with all the new toys) Petitou is lovely local stop-off.

Within seconds of arriving at Thread Cafe for breakkie, both little ones immediately sought out the toy box, just like piggy’s sniff out truffles and like a moth to a flame.... they were straight over there, pulling things out left right and centre, and hunting around for some new gem of a toy. Meanwhile, my vino loving hubby pointed out to me the extremely close proximity of the wine rack to the toy box. Eeek. There could have been trouble. Big trouble. But luckily, there wasn’t.

After choosing a few toys from the large selection (a phone, a My little pony and a dolly) and a couple of books to bring over to our table, we ordered our lattes (great coffee art here by the way) and babycino’s which looked so good that I just wanted to gobble one up myself... cute little teacup and saucer, two marshies and real chocolate shavings on top. What a treat!

Unfortunately no highchairs here, which is kind of a shame seeing as they are so set-up for kidlets in other ways, but the cafe has double doors which are easy for navigating prams and with a spacious interior, large communal table at the front, and sunny rear courtyard there is ample space. Lucky we had our trusty old holiday stroller in the boot of the car, which was handy to strap our incredibly, busy, wiggly worm 13 month old into, so that we (and she) could eat. Apart from that, this place is great for families, and was full of them! The wee ones will just love all the new toys to discover as well as the crayons, pencils, textas and colouring books. And they won’t go hungry either with a special kids menu including old favourites such as cheesy toast fingers, fairy bread, naked humpty dumpty (no shell) and soldiers, and frog in a pond. Kids meals are served on brightly coloured melamine plates and come out first.

There were a lot of staff, all very friendly and welcoming, engaging and chatting with the kids, attentive and very quick to assist with the spilt babycino all over my Diesel jeans, Converse, the table and on to the floor (unfortunately I cannot blame the little ones this time... it was actually me the klutz!)

The coffee here is good, the tea is my favourite T2, the bread is from Noisette and the menu is fresh and full of variety. I wolfed down the smashed avo and fetta on toast, after tossing up between the healthy option and the indulgent Frenchy french toast (next time). Pastries and croissants adorn the counter, their award winning vanilla slice looked mighty fine (again, next time), and there were all kinds of other goodies including yo-yo’s, brownies, lemon slice, giant muffins and cookies. Lunch options include daily specials - perhaps a spicy curry, traditional pasta, healthy salad, or hearty soup.

Thread Cafe is warm, relaxed and casual, with colourful art for sale, a friendly owner behind the counter, and quirky touches like the scrabble pieces spelling “pull” and “push” on the doors, and is just the type of local cafe everyone would love to have around the corner or down the road to pop into often. A sweet little spot that all the members of the family will enjoy.

 Dairy Australia is calling on all families to ‘wake up their bones with breakfast’ during National Healthy Bones Week this August (1 - 7 August 2011), by sharing a dairy-rich breakfast each morning.

This follows a new Australian study which showed children who skipped breakfast were less likely to meet the dietary recommendations for dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yogurt, which are the major contributors of calcium to the diet.

Delicious calcium-rich breakfast ideas for little ones:  

Try one of these ideas for your little ones, knowing they will get at least one serve of dairy in the process!

• Try pouring hot milk over their breakfast cereal in the morning; it’s delicious over muesli, Weet Bix or corn flakes. Simply warm milk in a saucepan or microwave using a jug or cup, taking care not to boil it.

• Make a home-made hot chocolate by warming a teaspoon or two of drinking chocolate with milk.

• Toast English muffins, top with baked beans and a slice of Australian cheddar cheese and grill until golden.

• Make French toast by dipping day-old bread slices in a little milk, then beaten egg and pan frying in a little butter. Serve sprinkled lightly with cinnamon sugar and a warm glass of milk for that full dairy serve.

My first visit to Elk Horn Roadhouse was on a miserably wet Saturday afternoon. The walk from the car park provided much delight for the kids who took advantage of their gumboots to jump in ‘muddy puddles’ a la Peppa Pig. Upon seeking refuge inside we were greeted with an obvious kitchen accident in that the whole place was filled with that distinct burnt toast (or similar) smell. Doors were wide open on a very cold day making it a little chilly inside.

That visit allowed me to discover their spiced candied walnuts (you can buy them to take home) in a lovely salad with chargrilled chicken, Drysdale goats’ cheese and fresh pear. The soup du jour for one “little eat” and a garlic and cheese pizza for another and we were served well on the last table available for the taking in this extremely popular local haunt.

So when we made our way down there for another visit, on a beautifully crisp but very sunny winter’s day during the week, we were pleasantly surprised at just how different that ‘first’ impression was. The front area has a couple of tables basking in winter’s sun. There’s a side return with more tables dotted between half wine barrels planted with olive trees and a few large wooden crates with the beginnings (or remnants) of a herb garden. With the sandpit located in this area, it is a haven for little ones whilst the rest of the family takes in the Bellarine Peninsula vibe.

We dined on the front porch which is dotted with gas heaters and enclosed with plastic café blinds. There are a couple of larger tables that were well suited to the group of mammas catching up with bubs in capsules and highchairs whilst toddlers were running in and out to the sandpit. There were a few tables of sea changer retirees and a group of young Gen Y-ers doing the Friday catch up thang.

The kids couldn’t get past the dark chocolate and berry muffins with a bubbacino (+ marshallow) arrived shortly after each other in perfect timing. Minutes later came my French toast with Istra bacon and organic maple syrup served alongside a perfectly made long black from Coffee Supreme. Bliss. The menu has the usual poached egg and sides offering, along with generous servings of corn fritters or sautéed mushrooms plus toast and spreads or house made granola. I immediately had brunch envy when I saw the porridge special arrive to a nearby table, presented on a wooden board in a little silver bowl with poached quinces and a teeny bottle of milk to pour on top. Too cute.

As the sun was shining and the sandpit a hive of activity, another long black was ordered as the kids entertained themselves. The constant stream of tradies and professionals grabbing take away coffees can only indicate that the locals in know, know where to go. If homemade sweet treats tickle your fancy then you can’t go past the Elkhorn Roadhouse Lemon Slice – old school and lemony sweet, just as it should be. There are also brownies and changing display of cakes plus some egg & bacon tarts that appear to have a reputation of their own. Plus the browsing in the little shop makes for lovely shopping with Mozi candles, retro milk bottles, local Zeally Bay breads and Moriac eggs alongside Elk Horn’s own range of preserves (the strawberry and lemon jam is yum).

Elk Horn Roadhouse has a ton of accolades for its food including Country Eats Champ in the most recent Cheap Eats Guide and it is not hard to see why. The breakfast menu is much more flexible for little ones than lunch and as it is a little place, a quieter time of the week would be ideal for families rather than the popular weekends. Locals would be rejoicing that this little tin shed has become a foodie delight although I imagine they’d also love to keep a little bit of Elk Horn to themselves.

The new Babycino sized KeepCup

Coffee and the park really do go hand in hand. Especially when you have little ones (not to mention, crazy, busy, energetic toddlers) the park really is your little one’s best friend. And for us busy, sleep-deprived, multi-tasking Mamma’s, coffee is OUR best friend. So at least a couple of times a week I pop the little ones in the double pram, pack up our baby bag, and head out for some fresh air and vitamin D, a nice big walk, and lots of fun in the park. But of course, being the cafe-obsessed family that we are, a quick stop off for a latte, babycino and perhaps a little treat for morning tea is more often than not on the cards.

I have owned a KeepCup for a little while now and most of the time I try to remember to take it with me for my takeaway caffeine hit. However, I will admit, most of the time I forget it. But when I did remember it, it always seemed kinda weird getting my latte in an environmentally friendly re-usable cup, but getting not one but two babycino’s in take-away coffee cups. Winter’s Cafe has been a stalwart on the ‘Paris’ end of Pakington Street for many years. Recently taken over by two young, professional and very enthusiastic gentlemen it has had a revamp with a new look, new menu and a whole new vibe. Gone is the daggy old Winter’s Cafe and in its place is a cool space with polished concrete floors, Third Drawer Down tea towels adorning the walls, great coffee and a friendly cafe vibe.

It was a very rainy and typically frosty Geelong morning when we ventured into a well heated space. With large windows at the front, it affords the most fabulous people watching vantage point! A communal table with bench seats lends to the casual experience and a round table smack bang in the centre of space is loaded with a large vase of flowers, newspapers for customers and a tempting tray of small cakes, muffins, tarts and pastries from Little Bertha.

Open for breakfast and lunch, we settled on a long black from Syndicate Espresso – an organic and fair-trade coffee – which was exactly as it should be, rich and smooth and at the perfect temperature. Babycino’s are well supported with a single marshmallow (enough white sugar in this mumma’s mind!) for $1.50. Also available are Found organic juices, milkshakes, Larsen & Thompsen teas, Calma Sutra fresh chai lattes plus organic hot chocolates spiced with chilli or lavender.

The all day breakfast menu is perfect for everyone from weary partygoers to young families. The ‘Little Tacker’ menu offers vegemite and cheese toast soldiers ($6.00) or kids poached eggs ($7.00). (FYI – We ordered the adult version of the poached eggs for $9.50 as Miss 5 was super hungry and can eat two eggs without trying.) Bigger Eats can choose from seriously delicious house made granola with poached winter fruits, or equally satisfying warmed house made banana bread with maple mascarpone and poached rhubarb or eggs anyway served on La Madre’s sourdough with all the usual suspects as sides.

Lunch time sees the ever popular roast pork baguette alongside tempting salads like twice cooked duck or stuffed zucchini flowers and grazing plates. Kid friendly options include any sandwich combination you’d like toasted or fresh as well as soup of the day or some warming beer battered chips plus the ‘Little Tacker’ menu options including chicken strips and rainbow salad. And being fully licensed could make catching up with little ones a fun lunch place indeed!

There is a great space available upstairs which the owners haven’t yet touched but plan to paint in the very near future. It is perfect for larger groups and feels a bit out of the way of the main cafe in case you are unsure of how your kids are going to behave that day! Bear in mind though that there is a big set of stairs leading to the top meaning you would have to carry a pram up there if required.

Support for this new venture has been strong too if their facebook page is anything to go by – amassing the ‘likers’ in merely seconds. And sometimes, they have a terrific incentive to check-in at Winter’s Cafe on facebook and receive 5% off your bill. Social media at its finest!

Whilst the new Winter’s Cafe is not aimed specifically at kids, it is definitely family friendly. Make a booking on the weekend as it gets very busy but definitely head there for excellent food, great service and a relaxed cafe vibe that you and your little ones will love.

How often do you eat out at cafes and restaurants with your little ones?

When Lucia was little, I made a point of getting out every day, just for a coffee…the day we came home from hospital we stopped in at Brunetti, in Carlton, and we still frequent there today! She is half Italian, after all…

These days, she’s bored by all that, and can no longer be seduced by a baby-cino, so it’s strictly pizza dinners with no lingering! We eat out maybe once every 2 weeks.

Do you eat out more or less often since you have had kids? Why is that?

Less! Much less! And when I do eat out, it’s at 6 pm, somewhere quick and local and not particularly flash…my one exception is mentioned in the last question…

Do you have any horror stories or embarrassing moments that have happened when eating out at cafes with your little ones?

I have blocked out how tricky it was to eat out with her as a toddler, but I am constantly surpised at the number of people who approach me with stories of having eaten in the same restaurants as us in years gone by…thankfully they remember her as being messy but well behaved. I will not abide the running around the room behaviour, and thankfully Lucia understands this.

When we lived in LA briefly when she was little, we ate at a thai restaurant with Ann Bancroft and Mel Brookes. They thought she was delightful and loved watching her eat her massive bowl of rice. A great memory to have.

Do you have any tips for taking little ones to Cafes?

Early sittings for lunch and dinner, don’t take the pram in, take paper and pencils, bribe with ice cream to encourage good behaviour and smile A LOT at the other patrons, so they will be forgiving!!

What is your favourite kid-friendly Melbourne Cafe?

Without a doubt, I have two favourite places to eat with Lucia, that leave us BOTH happy and satisfied. For a casual lunch and no frills, authentic, delicious food, TI AMO, the instituton in Lygon St, Carlton.

For a bit of a flash dinner and divine service, try an early sitting at the brilliant SUPERMAXI in Fitzroy North. Giovanni and Rita are parents themselves, and welcome families into their lovely restaurant. The pizza’s are fantastic, too.
